About Us

Where we came from

Whetstone was founded on a simple frustration: training and assessment methodologies weren’t keeping pace with the environments they were designed for. Operations are fluid, connected, and unpredictable. Most programs were still built in silos, evaluated in controlled conditions, and measured against standards that had little to do with what happens in the field.

We saw the same pattern everywhere we looked. Security evaluations based on simple compliance and deterrence rather than thinking like an adversary. Risk assessments that never connected to strategy. Training that prepared people for a test rather than a mission. Different domains, the same flaw: complex problems met with simple, disconnected answers.

The errors that matter most rarely happen at the center of a plan. They happen in the transitions; between modalities, between phases, between what was prepared for and what arrived. Whetstone was built to work in exactly those spaces.

Why the Whetstone Group

  • The whole operator.  We integrate psychology, physiology, tactics, law, and policy. Not as separate disciplines, but as a unified system.

  • 720-degree training.  We design for the real operational environment: mindset, tactical theory, mission planning, and physical readiness calibrated to what actually happens in the field.

  • Customized, not commoditized. Every solution is built to the specific operational environment. We fully integrate technology and procedures rather than pushing isolated, proprietary tools that don't survive first contact with reality.

  • Honest feedback loops.  We foster cultures of continual learning through after-action feedback and tactical-theory exploration. Our programs evolve because operators tell us what actually happened.

How we think

The most important question in any assessment isn’t what went wrong. It’s what is reality going to ask you next time?

Most programs are built to address visible failures. Whetstone is built to surface the ones that haven’t cost anything yet, because those are the most accurate picture of where a system is vulnerable.

We arrive at every engagement without a predetermined answer. The assessment drives the recommendation. If the evidence doesn’t support an intervention, we don’t recommend one. The most credible outcome of a rigorous assessment is occasionally finding that nothing needs to change.

What sets us apart

We see the full picture

Every engagement starts with observation. We widen the aperture before we draw any conclusions.

We are built for your environment

Every solution is designed from the ground up for the specific operational demands of your population.

We build capacity, not dependency

The goal of every engagement is to leave your organization more capable than we found it.

Who we serve

The Whetstone Group works with government agencies, special units, first-responder organizations, and private sector clients operating in high-threat, high-consequence environments. Our engagements are not volume-based. We work with organizations where the consequences are real and the margin for error is small.

The Whetstone Group approaches every engagement as a single integrated problem: the operator, the environment, and the mission together. We embed, diagnose, and build programs that reflect what happens on the ground.

When performance breaks down, we search for why it happened, when it started, and what it takes to prevent it from happening again.

That is the standard we hold ourselves to. It should be the standard you demand.
